First, we had been told at originally we would ALL be welcomed and then, told that STRAIGHTS need not come. We want to be treated equality yet we think its ok to be discriminate? Second, I talked to Brenda about this; she said she gets treated like this a lot in the gay world. WTF! How can we ask for equal rights when we aren’t willing to give equal consideration?
In commUNITY I stand,
BUT you have to take everything you will need or want because the closest supermarket is over 15 miles away. I always like to say, bring your own party. The other campers and the natural beauty makes it the perfect place to do it.
One of the best GAY campgrounds I have been to. Staff is very friendly, very quiet, loads of space to roam and be with nature if you want. Everybody I've met was sincere and interesting. I can't wait to go back again, and again, and again........
I called this guy myself to explain and see what could be done. He basically told me the same thing. He didn’t want any “swinging straight people” at HIS campground. He was quite rude about it too. When I tried to explain, very calmly, the above about Brenda, he told me they had a campground rule about “attitudes” and he did not need to be told anything about her.
David Chandler AKA SIR Shadow AKA Mama’s Tampa Shadow
From the minute you drive through the gate into the campground you are completely covered by a natural canopy of live Oak. It's very secluded and it's designed and laid out perfectly. Great sense of community within the regular campers there but so welcoming to newcomers. I've been to this campground so many times I can not even count. I met my partner there almost 9 years ago. Great people, Great vibe. No drama (unless you create it - then expect to be escorted to the gate). If you're in South Florida, it's an easy drive and easy to find if you can read directions, it's worth it to check this place out, If you are considering coming during our winter months, the weather is a little cool but expect more warm, sunny days than rainy ones and snow is completely out of the question, although I've endured a few good hard rains out there. Once you go, you'll understand why there are so many permanent sites there. It's like a little piece of tropical paradise surrounded by woods and open fields. Plenty of hook ups for all sizes of motor home. Ample tent sites as well.

And begin #Rant
Next I spoke with Mars. I explained the group of us wanted to come camping and asked if having a female come would be a problem. The person I spoke to at the time said that they are predominately gay male campground, however women would be welcome as long as they understood this, and were respectful. With that we began planning our trip.
Unaccepting, unfriendly, and down right rude. Your money is best spent elsewhere!!
To those that know me, I don’t generally rant but after what happened today I feel I need to. I am not going to Vaguebook it. I am calling out Camp Mars, in Venus Florida right here and right now… Hold on to your hats this is going to be a long one.
Looks like we will be spending the week at Vitambi Campground in Clewiston, Florida who was even willing to wave their normal restriction to accommodate us.
Obnoxious staff. Nothing special about the place and the staff was outrageously rude. Never again.
Now for anyone that does not knows Brenda…. She is far from straight! She is a gay man in a woman’s body. She is a well-known writer of gay erotic fiction. She is the owner of Florida Leather & Fetish Pride, was a member of the Sister of Perpetual Indulgence and the Tampa Leather Club. She has done a LOT for the gay community and just happens to be married to a man. All that is secondary, here are the issues.
The background: About a month ago my leather family (a group of close friends whom feel close to one another) talked about taking a “family vacation”. It was just to be the group of us, to a gay campground, within a day’s drive from our locations. We talked about either Camp Oz over in Georgia or Mars here in Florida. When we spoke to Oz we were told it was a “boys only weekend” and since we had a female in the group it was a no go. Not a problem, as a private Campground we understand.
Today: Brenda (the woman in our group) called Mars to begin making our reservation. She was fine until she said the word “family”. With that the person who identified himself as an owner took the phone, from the lady helping her, and explained it was a not a “family” resort. That they did not allow kids (under 21) and that it was a gay campground. Brenda explained who we are and that we were not THAT type of family. To that the gentleman explained that it was not for “swinger” and that heterosexuals would not be welcomed.
To my friends that are thinking about ever going to Camp Mars…Don’t bother; we do not need to spend our money at a place that discriminates and has such poor customer service To my friends going there, I ask you to think again.
